Back to School 2023-2024 FAQs

Dear Families:

We are excited about the new school year! Here is some important information to keep in mind.

Building Opens - Students may enter the school beginning at 8:15 a.m.

Tardy  - Tardy bell is 8:35 a.m., and instruction begins -  A child must have a parent/guardian fill out a tardy slip at the security desk when late.

Dismissal Time  -  Regular dismissal time is 3:25 p.m.

Early Release Days - School will dismiss at 12:55 p.m. on early release days.

Birthday Celebrations -  Birthdays are a special part of every child's life. If your child is celebrating a birthday, you may eat lunch with your child. Please don't bring cakes, cupcakes, treats, goodie bags, or birthday gifts to school.

Lunch -  Parents are welcome to eat lunch with their child/children. Don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher for a lunch schedule. No outside food will be allowed. Parents are not allowed to have a delivery service deliver outside food for their child to the school. We cannot keep up with the high demand for food deliveries and be responsible. As a reminder, the school provides free breakfast and lunch each day.

Visiting - Families are not allowed to "visit" their students. If you want to "visit," you must sign your child out and leave the building premises.

Field Trips -  Please be advised that all students must complete a field trip permission form before they can attend any field trip. Some trips require a fee; checks are not accepted - only money orders or cash.   No refunds will be provided.   Parents are not allowed to ride the bus - they must provide transportation.

Medications - No student is to have on their person any medicines (i.e., pills, inhalers, etc.)  You must submit all medications to the school nurse.

Bus - Please contact the Transportation Department at (757) 393-8269 with any bus-related issues. Be sure to download the app to track your child's bus.

Absences - Each time your student is absent, please send a note to the teacher when the student returns. Be sure to include the child's name, date, and reason for the absence. Once received, the absence will be marked as an excused absence.

Conference Request - To request a conference with your child's teacher or administration, please email them directly with your request. Please be aware that teachers cannot take phone calls during the instructional day.

Student Early Dismissal - Students should only be released early for medical appointments and emergencies.   Students should not be picked up early every day. The latest time to pick up your child from the front building is 3:00 p.m. on regular school days and 12:15 p.m. on early release days because buses need full access to the bus ramp for parking, and we must prepare for the dismissal of students. Students will only be released to an authorized adult with proper identification.

Dismissal Change - For your child's safety, they must go home every day in the usual way UNLESS we have a NOTE from you. Please notify the office that you are emailing the teacher for an unexpected change. The email should include the student's name, a copy of your ID, your name, contact number, and the change being made. No bus changes can be made via email. You will be required to fill out a form that has to be approved by transportation before a bus change can take effect - this approval process takes several days.

Late Pickups - Local authorities will be contacted after we have attempted to contact all emergency contacts if your child is not picked up 1 hour after our school's dismissal time. As a reminder, the parent's responsible for communicating with us the plans for picking up their child and ensuring emergency contact information is up-to-date.

Absences - Please send a written note to excuse the absence with your child when they return to school. Any makeup work will be sent home when your child returns. Teachers cannot provide student makeup work the same day you request it. Makeup work can be done when the child returns to school. Please email your child's teacher if you have special circumstances.

Blue Communication Folders - Folders will be sent home with your child. It will contain homework assignments and important information. Please review it and send it back with your child the next day.

Student Cell phones - Please have your child keep their cell phones on vibrate during school hours. They are not to have it out for any reason during the day. Cell phones that are visible and heard will be confiscated, and the parent will be responsible for picking it up.

Visiting the Classroom - If you need to observe your child in the classroom, you may only do so by contacting your child's teacher. You cannot disrupt the learning environment during the observation or interact with your child or the teacher. Conferences must be requested via email and held at another time.

Parent Portal & Schoology Access - Parents can review their child's academic performance, progress, grades, attendance, and upcoming assignments in Parent Portal. Check the Parent Portal and School access sheets to log in. Please update all contact information.

SchoolMessenger - There will be times when we send out a notification via email or voice call. Please review the voicemail or email for the message before contacting the school.

Chromebooks - Lost or damaged Chromebooks will be charged for replacements. Please stress to your child how important it is to care for their electronics.
